Cake Decorating Techniques – Writing!
Once you have mastered the very basics of cake decorating you might want to try writing as a decoration technique.
Here are 7 key tips I learnt from cake decorating books about writing on cakes:
- Use an icing recipe that has a suitable consistency for writing. The icing needs to have a thinner consistency for writing than most other cake decorations. This is because the icing needs to flow out smoothly so there is no break in the lettering.
- The pressure you place on the piping bag is very important. Try and keep the pressure consistent so the writing is standardized.
- When you start the letter (for print) or word (for cursive) touch the tip to the surface and then lift it off and touch it to the surface again when you have finished the letter or word.
- Practice on a surface other than the cake to begin with. Writing can be quite difficult to master.
- Use a round writing tip for writing. They come in different sizes.
- Keep you arm up do not rest it on the surface. Use your whole arm when writing.
- If the icing breaks you can always go back and patch it. So don’t panic.
Hopefully these tips that I learnt from the cake decorating books will help you learn and master writing on your cake and avoid some of the mistakes I made.
